Episode 107: Michael Apostol: Reflections on Moral Psychology and Our Beliefs
In this episode, we're joined by Michael Apostol. Prior to beginning his undergraduate studies, Michael decided that he wanted to pursue a career in therapy, and realized that he needed to both major in psychology and gain research experience while completing his degree. Because of his interests in therapy, he focused on taking clinical psychology coursework and familiarizing himself with clinical practice. After reflecting on his clinical internship and coursework, he realized that clinical practice wasn't for him. Through this process, however, Michael discovered something that he truly loved: research. From there, he dived into social, cognitive, and clinical research – he explored a range of topics including fighting in professional hockey, moral psychology, the psychology of religion, and the Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Michael's research interests are in moral psychology, judgments, decision-making, and reasoning. He wants to focus on moral judgments and decision-making because he thinks that by understanding why and how people decide that some things are right while others are wrong is the key to reducing unnecessary suffering, eliminating prejudice, and promoting human well-being. Michael's long-term goal is an academic career where he hopes to conduct research, teach, and contribute to a university community. For now, his goal is to work in a research setting before applying to PhD programs in social or cognitive psychology.
In this episode, we explore:
psychology
academic research
autism
moral psychology
beliefs vs knowledge
street epistomology
and loads more.
